Doorways

Brigit  installed a doorknob
on a big cedar tree
at doorknob height
in a dark wood
of moss beds and mottled light.

Every day she walks out to it
with her cane & stale bread,
leaving the cockatoo behind
squawking ‘Tir na nOg’.

She calls it a doorway
to her place, but going there often,
she will begin to find doorways everywhere
and with every breath
doorknobs at doorknob height,
until she will forget to return home
to feed the cockatoo.
