White spaces – further to the pyramid text

There is something immediately fascinating about a text which is thousands of years old from a culture so far in our history as to almost come from an entirely different world. The fact that so much of it is missing & leaves gaps for our imagination to enter, as if by withholding details more mystery infuses the text than had it been whole. But this absence is excused by its age, the gratitude that we have anything at all about our ancestors. The final irony is that the poem reads like a contemporary poem – free verse intended to create spaces for interaction between reader and text. Somehow, despite being about a fairly mundane description of boat on a river, the result is a sense of this poem’s having gained a kind of sacred status.
